Element Systems Overview
Deepen your insight into the fundamental structures of reality as taught in the Abhidhamma. Understanding these elements cultivates a profound awareness of the physical and mental phenomena that compose our world and the direct path to liberation.
The 4 Essential Elements (Mahābhūta)
- Earth (Paṭhavī): Solidity, hardness, and softness. The foundation of extension.
- Water (Āpo): Fluidity and cohesion. The element that binds matter together.
- Fire (Tejo): Heat and cold. The element of maturation and metabolism.
- Wind (Vāyo): Motion and pressure. The element of vibration and support.
The 8 Expanded Elements System
Building upon the physical base, this system incorporates the dimensions of experience and the ultimate reality:
- Space (Ākāsa): The container and interval between forms.
- Time (Kāla): The flow of causality and duration.
- Consciousness (Viññāṇa): The knowing faculty that cognizes objects.
- Nibbāna: The unconditioned element, the cessation of suffering.
